| Performance Park earns Responsible Development Award |
Thorp Associates’ design of the Performance Park Pavilion was recently cited by the Estes Park Responsible Development Association for exemplary design and development of an environmentally sensitive site. The original property had been donated to the Town of Estes Park as an essentially unusable site, being surrounded on three sides by inaccessible river frontage, and the fourth by a stone cliff. Utilizing the site design expertise of Design Studios West, Thorp Associates accomplished an award-winning design for a unique outdoor performance venue making use of materials relative to earlier EPURA Riverwalk improvements. The resultant development has breathed new life into the western Riverwalk district of Estes Park.

| AIA Design Excellence Award received for National Park Visitor Center |
The Northern Colorado Chapter of the American Institute of Architects has awarded Thorp Associates a 2001 Merit Award for Design Excellence for the RMNP Fall River Visitor Center, located just outside the boundaries of Rocky Mountain National Park. The Awards Gala was held at the historic Stanley Hotel. Created as a landmark public-private partnership, the Center enhances the educational and environmental stewardship experience of RMNP's nearly 3,000,000 annual visitors. Carefully positioned to take advantage of extraordinary site conditions, the structure incorporates native moss rock veneer and log superstructure to recall the rustic character of early 20th century Park facilities. Jury comments included praise for the design's appropriate character and use of native materials.
The project, approved in 1993, was put on hold for nearly five years awaiting federal legislative initiatives to allow Park employees to be employed full-time in a facility outside the National Park. Once the bill passed, in order to minimize the effects of five years of inflation, a fast-track design and construction process was initiated, and the project opened two months ahead of anticipated completion.
